Rock of Ages – Golf in “America’s Home Town”- A “Plymouth Rock” Golf Adventure.
From A Golfer’s Perspective
Although the stick-and-ball games of the era were likely far from the minds of the Mayflower travelers on that cold day, December 26, 1620, when they landed near Plymouth Rock, it’s possible that a few aboard wished they had brought their sticks and balls along once they discovered the landscape was beautifully suited for such games. After all, since these games began around 1457 with just a stick and a ball, they had become well-established in various parts of the world by the 1600s.
Fast-forward to today: from a golfer’s perspective, we can be thankful that Plymouth, Massachusetts—known as “America’s Hometown”—is home to 13 golf courses, including 10 public and 3 private options. These courses are beautiful, unique, top-quality, and designed by renowned course designers. According to Links, there is an additional 29 golf courses are located within 20 miles of Plymouth, comprising 15 public, 6 municipal, and 8 private courses.
The temperate climate of the North Atlantic coast is characterized by mild, humid weather. Coastal waters tend to moderate temperatures, resulting in cooler summers and warmer winters compared to regions farther inland. As a result, most golf courses in this area typically open in early spring and remain open through Thanksgiving, with some courses in Plymouth even operating throughout the winter, weather permitting. The summers are warm and humid, but the saltwater breezes from the Atlantic make the weather quite pleasant.
This region is a golfer’s paradise. And for those who appreciate fine dining, the local restaurants are diverse and outstanding, especially if you enjoy seafood. If you feel inspired to explore, the area also offers plenty of nature and historical sites, such as the Plimouth Patuxet Museum and the Plimouth Village recreation.
Where is it
Plymouth Massachusetts, is located on the Northeast coast of the United States, adjacent to Plymouth Bay. It is approximately 57 minutes (43 miles or 69 km) southeast of Boston via MA-3 South. And from Green International Airport in Providence, Rhode Island, it takes about 1 hour and 9 minutes (62.8 miles or 101 km) using I-95 North and I-495 South.
Between Logan International Airport and Green International Airport in Providence, there are hundreds of flight options available from various locations across the USA and around the world.
A Bit of History
Plymouth, Massachusetts is “America’s Hometown.”
This moniker was bestowed on the town because it was where the pilgrims first landed on December 26th and built the first permanent settlement on our land. So it holds a significant place in American history and culture. It is also recognized as the site of our nation’s first Thanksgiving.
In 1620, a group of England’s Puritan separatists escaped religious persecution by leaving Plymouth, England, and crossing the Great Western Ocean (now known as the Atlantic Ocean) on the Mayflower, a three-decker vessel. Their aim was to establish a settlement where they could freely practice their beliefs, and they did. They arrived after an arduous 66-day voyage. Despite the harsh conditions aboard the Mayflower, only one person died en route, and another was saved from falling overboard in rough seas.
However, upon arriving in December, the Pilgrims faced dire challenges. Their first winter conditions were awful and led to the deaths of half of the 102 passengers within the first year. They died of the cold and disease. The survivors successfully negotiated a treaty with the Wampanoag Chief Massasoit. This allowed them to live in peace for 55 years. They founded the Plimouth Colony, it was the first English settlement.
Interesting factoid: Of the 132 individuals on board the Mayflower, which included 102 passengers and 30 crew members, only 51 had children. Interestingly, it is estimated that about 35 million people today can trace their ancestry back to one of these 51 “Pilgrims.” I’m not one of them.

Course Brief
The “New England Journal of Golf” boasted that the Atlantic Golf Club is one of “the most under-appreciated golf courses in Massachusetts and one of the premier golf courses south of Boston.” Golf Digest rates it as the 12th-best course in Massachusetts. It was designed by the team of Geoffery Cornish, Brian Silva, and Mark Mungeam. The course spans over 178 scenic acres and has – Holes 18, Par 72, Yds 6,728, USGA 73.1, and Slope 137 from the back tees. There are Four sets of tees. It is a big course with plenty of challenges and a nice variety of holes, gently rolling terrain, but with some elevated tee to fairway and fairway to green holes and meticulously kept bent grass fairways and greens. The undulating greens are said to be fairly fast, I can attest to that. There are a lot of mature trees, most of them hardwoods, that turn colors in the fall and line most of the fairways. Some fairways are pretty wide open, while others are quite narrow. There’s a smattering of bunkers and just a couple of holes where water comes into play. I had quite an enjoyable but challenging round.

Crosswinds Golf Club – 27 holes

Course Brief
There are 3 nines designed by the award-winning team of Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. It looks like they took great advantage of the surrounding stunning landscape and the natural topography. As I can attest, the nines are beautifully designed and challenging, yet fun. It offers dramatic elevation changes and a unique blend of rolling fairways and large, gently undulating greens. There are panoramic views and comfortable spacing between holes for a resort-style atmosphere. Several of the holes border sensitive environmental areas, including cranberry bogs, which are a wonder to behold in the fall when the berries are ripe and deep red for harvest. Water comes into play on at least a half dozen holes throughout the courses, and there are strategic bunkers on both the fairways and protecting the greens. The course also offers great views of the surrounding countryside from several elevated tees.
Each Nine is named after One of the greatest American golfers in the history of the sport… Bobby Jones, Francis Oimet, and Babe Zaharias: Bobby Jones entered his first national golf championship at the age of 14. Jones won four U.S. Open championships and finished second four more times during his career. He also won three of the four British Open championships in which he competed…Francis Oimet – He was the first amateur to win the U.S. Open. The biggest crowds ever seen in American golf followed the playoffs, and his achievement was front-page nationwide news. Oimet’s U.S. Open success is credited for bringing golf into the American sporting mainstream….Babe Zaharias – Ms. Zaharias was an Olympian, and as far as golf was concerned, she made one of the greatest comebacks in sports history – winning the National Women’s Open and the Tam O’Shanter All-American golf tournaments after major cancer surgery. In 1950, the Associated Press named Zaharias the most outstanding woman athlete of the first half of the 20th century.

Pinehiils Golf Club – The Jack Nicklaus Course
Photo provided by Pinehills GC
Course Brief
Designed by the Bear’s son Jack Jr., The Nicklaus Course is spectacularly set on over 300 acres of rolling hills punctuated by dramatic, glacially carved kettles and kames (A kame, or knob, is a glacial landform, an irregularly shaped hill or mound composed of sand, gravel). The course is also in a densely wooded pine forest. Each whole is carved out of the trees, giving each its own distinct experience. Gently rolling fairways are framed by these tall pines, leading to well relatively easy to get to greens that have subtle rolling complexities. The greens are firm and fast. And it is said that the putts do not break as much as they look! Says who! A classic variety of holes makes this course both beautiful and challenging. Keep in mind that the fairways are tree-lined from start to finish, although the playing corridors are wide enough to allow for a good free-swinging experience. Forced carries over fescue, fescue forest, or water can make some holes difficult, to say the least. From my perspective, the course is not walkable at all. Some tees are a considerable distance from the previous green. Some big elevation changes allow for some terrific and expansive views over the treetop. Five sets of tees allow this daily-fee golf course to play from 5,185 to 7,243 yards.

Pinehills Golf Club – The Reese Jones Course
Photo provided by Pinehills Golf Club
Rees Jones Course Brief
Course Moto “Be a Member for the Day”. It is a very upscale daily-fee course that feels like a private club. It has 5 sets of tees that play from 5,185 to 7,243 yards. Designed By the Reese Jones team with Steve Weisser. The course is built up from the fabulous local topography. In the Jones team’s typical style, they developed the course to be both fun and challenging. The course has subtle details that you must pay attention to and gives you a different experience with every hole. The course features dramatic elevation changes, and the fairways are carved out of the thick pine forests. Some of these holes are very isolated, and you can barely see another group. The distance between holes makes walking nearly impossible. There are drives that must clear vast waste areas and avoid a thick forest on the sides of the fairways. There are uphill sharp dog legs and holes that are pretty average, so there is a nice combination. This juxtaposition of the course results is a lot of fun, but it is also a challenging test that requires good measures of thought and targeted shot-making from time to time. Sometimes you find yourself playing downhill, then other times straight uphill. You can experience downhill drives of over 300 yards. The course is built on the southwest section of a substantial 300-acre thickly forested property. The course has tree-lined fairways from start to finish. Although the width of the fairways never makes you feel closed in. However, beware of a bad tee shot, because it will find you in deep trouble with deep bunkers and terrain drop-offs that can make recovering difficult. I feel the course is beautifully designed and maintained. It definitely feels like a private course both in the quality of the course and the service rendered by the staff. They make you feel like you are a member. Although it is simply a daily-fee golf course that is very exciting to play.

Southers Marsh Golf Club
Photo provided by Southers Marsh – The Cranberry Harvest
Course Brief
This 18-hole executive-style course sits on thirty acres of scenic cranberry bogs. It plays like a full-length course and is highly rated and challenging, as I can attest. It is a beautiful Par 61, that plays from 2,907 to 4,111 from the back tees, with a Slope 112 and a Rating of 61.8. Designed by Architect Nick Filla and Dahn Tibbett with Cranberry Bogs galore. It turned out that Turfgrass and cranberries are complementary commodities for the owners. The course opened in July 2001. The Stearns family constructed it on their farm, where the same family has produced the cranberry bogs for more than 100 years.
To make a long story short, how this all developed; it was caused by ups and downs in the Cranberry business and a subsequent big and long dip. The family needed to do something to survive the downs. The owners understood that they needed to plant Grass around the bogs, which created an ah-ha moment. Around 1995, Mr. Stern’s father planted a bog, and the younger Stearns said. “If I have to plant grass around the bog, I might as well put in a couple of golf holes.” It is a beautiful course as it winds through the family’s 100-year-old, active cranberry bogs. With space somewhat limited for a course of 116 acres, It seems to me they went to great lengths to make sure the holes were varied and interesting, from the wide-open links to tree-lined corridors all surrounded by the Boggs. You need to hit every club in your bag.

Waverly Oaks Golf Club-
Photo provided by Waverly Oaks GC
Course Brief
Waverly Oaks namesake came from a group of very large, magnificent, and very old white oak trees that grew near Boston but is said that they went extinct in the 1920s. The trees are named after Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley novels, a series of historical fiction books written in the early 19th century that became associated with the strength, durability, and grandeur of the novel’s popularity and longevity. It seems, I guess a good fit, These trees, were majestic, strong, and long-lived and they are the courses’ namesakes. They were mature trees when the keel of the Mayflower touched the sparkling sands of Plymouth harbor. The connection between the Waverley novels and oak trees has led to the naming of specific oak trees or groups of oaks as “Waverly Oaks.” And the Golf Course.
Now, Waverly Oaks Golf Club is an upscale, public daily-fee golf course located in historic Plymouth, Massachusetts. “The Brian Silva design was built on 240 acres of natural hills, sand-based soils, and valleys with over 100 feet in elevation changes. It is an outstanding championship par 72 course that offers 4 sets of tees playing from 7,114 yards from the tips.” There are wide rolling, really rolling, but fair fairways that provide an honest test of golf for players of all levels. There is very little water that comes into play, only on two holes. The fairways are tree-lined and do a great job at separating the fairways. There are some forced carries over waste areas of fescue (These are gnarly grasses), along with some DEEP bunkers and rough that create lots of places to get into DEEP trouble. These can make some holes really tough and challenging. Some tees are a considerable distance from the previous green, so walking is not a good idea. Greens are beautifully maintained, as I can attest, and are large, undulating; not sure how true they are, but they are very fast but fair (says who.)
“Each hole makes you appreciate the design and the unique challenge at hand. Unlike other courses where your memories of your round can blend together, you’ll remember how you did on the unique and well-named holes like “Double Trouble,” “Saddle,” “Down,” “Eternity,” or the “Black Hole.” The course goal, I am told, “is to create an environment that is unparalleled and committed to friendly and superb customer service.
