Golf Course Designed By: Pete Dye

Golf Course Brief:The River Course was an original Pete Dye layout but was completely renovated in 2004 through 2005. Dye always takes great advantage of everything the lay-of-the-land and the old plantation property has to offer...The renovation did not alter this. The course does seem somewhat less server now but it still is very challenging. The area has heavily wooded glades, deep ravines, beautiful banks of the James River and some serious Revolutionary & Civil War entrenchments, along with the foundations of a Colonial House-of- Ill-Repute as well...This gave Dye lots to work with. The course is boarded by the calm bright blue waters of the James River. You now see the James from the 1st, 9th, 16th, 17th and 18th holes. The course is routed through a housing developments and the Kingsmill resort. Most of the houses are well blocked by vegetation and trees although the resort does stand out well in the distance. This course has some big ups and downs and it would be difficult to walk. With the renovation the greens are not as elevated as before and allows many more opportunities to run the ball onto the putting surfaces. If you want to get close to the pin at all, you'll have to fly it onto the green and hope for a quick stop. Dyes also uses large sculpted bunkers that frame the landing areas, bunkers that are in the middle of the fairways, large undulating greens, rock-lined creeks, greens protected by bunkers and sever uphill fairways that rise to some long and narrow tiered greens to name just a few items that keep the play interesting. There are four sets of tees so that you can play to your own ability and level the playing field a bit. However, the forward sets of tees won't wipe away the challenge. The River Course is always in mint condition.
