“Arrogantly Shabby” Golf Adventure, South Myrtle Beach
Pawley’s Island

From A Golfer’s Perspective
There are 10 golf courses on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, with 9 being public and 1 private. These courses are considered some of the best in Myrtle Beach and are suitable for all skill levels. In addition to the island courses, there are approximately 15 public play courses within a 30-minute drive, depending on traffic. The courses are open for play year-round. The weather in Pawleys Island is generally fantastic, with a warm and temperate climate that offers four distinct seasons. South Carolina averages 209 sunny days per year, slightly more than the national average of 205 sunny days. The state also experiences around 103 days of precipitation per year, slightly less than the national average of 106 days. According to NOAA, Pawleys Island maintains a relaxed pace with old-fashioned hospitality, its beaches are beautiful and peaceful, the food and restaurant are outstanding.
Where is it
Pawley’s Island is situated along the serene shores of South Carolina’s Atlantic coast, in the South Myrtle Beach area, which is known locally as the “Grand Strand.” This region features 60 miles of unspoiled coastline, stretching from Little River on the North Carolina border down to Georgetown’s Winyah Bay. Pawley’s Island is the southernmost point of the Grand Strand. The area offers a quintessential Southern Lowcountry experience.
Pawley’s Island is a barrier island approximately 4 miles long and mostly 1/4 mile wide. It is separated from the mainland by the scenic Waccamaw Neck River and salt marshes. Access to the island is provided by causeways at both the north and south ends. Causeways are roadways slightly elevated above the water, rather than traditional bridges.
A Bit of History
The Waccamaw Neck is a thin strip of land situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Waccamaw River. It was home to the Waccamaw and Winyah Native American tribes for approximately 10,000 years. However, the arrival of the Spanish in 1521 brought devastating consequences for the native people, including enslavement, starvation, and the spread of diseases. By 1711, Percival Pawley acquired the land through federal land grants and developed it into rice plantations. In 1797, he either sold or gifted some of the land to a Scottish immigrant, Robert Nesbit, who named it Caledonia after his homeland.
Pawleys Island’s history as a beach resort began in the early 1700s, when wealthy rice planters sought a summer retreat from the hot inland climate and the malaria-carrying mosquitoes. The area produced a significant amount of rice until the early 20th century. The island is also known for its ghost stories, such as that of the “Gray Ghost,” who is said to haunt the Pawleys Island Marsh after dying there while searching for his lost love.
Pawleys Island is famous for its carefree, laid-back lifestyle, with activities such as golf, crabbing, fishing, and the craft of creating rope hammocks. The island’s motto, “Arrogantly Shabby,” reflects its casual and unspoiled nature. I found it beautiful.
Courses in the Area
I have reviewed five courses in the area: Caledonia, Heritage, Tradition, True Blue, and Willbrook.
Other public/semi-private courses on the Island are the Founders Golf Club and Country Club, Litchfield Country Club, Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club, and the River Club.
Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

Mike Strantz, the course designer, took great care to preserve the natural beauty of the course. I am told it is regarded as one of the best in the area by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine and is frequently ranked among the top 100 public courses in the USA. The course was built on a former rice plantation and has numerous old live oak trees draped in Spanish Moss along the marshy banks of the Waccamaw River Neck.
The layout features extensive bunkering and scattered water hazards—be cautious when retrieving golf balls from the water, as there are alligators present. Some tee shots are blind, adding to the challenge. The large, creatively designed greens are often protected by ponds, streams, imposing bunkers, and waste areas. Additionally, the course includes a few elevation changes that are not typically found in coastal South Carolina courses. Notably, it features five par 3 holes, which you might see on a par-70 layout.
The landscaping throughout the course is stunning, with colorful flowers blooming in season, all set against the backdrop of centuries-old Spanish oak trees. These trees frame each hole and help create separation between the fairways, making the course feel relatively tight. Pay attention to the tee markers, which are carved wooden ducks: Pintail (Black), Mallard (Blue), Wood Duck (White), and Redhead (Women); these indicate where to tee off.
Additionally, as the name suggests, there is a private Fishing Club on the property that is not open to the public. The current owners purchased the property in 1971 primarily for hunting and fishing. Each member has their own small lodge on the property and often fishes in the river or hunts ducks in the rice fields. Pawleys Island Creek is a premier fishing spot, particularly known for red drum, flounder, and speckled trout. This creek is accessible by boat or kayak, but fishing from Caledonia is not open to the public.

Heritage Golf Club
Photo provided by – Heritage Golf Club
Course Brief
Golf Digest consistently ranks Heritage Golf Club among the top 100 greatest public courses in America. Also known as Heritage Plantation due to its historical land, the course was built on 600 fertile acres along the scenic Waccamaw River Trail, which is situated between the long-abandoned rice and indigo plantations of True Blue and Midway.
The course was designed by Dan Maples and is one of my favorite courses on Pawley’s Island. It’s beautiful and challenging but playable. Mr. Maples designed the front nine of the course to wind through a heavily wooded area, while the back nine features swampy terrains and marshes, with water coming into play on eleven holes. Heritage GC boasts a lengthy layout of 7,118 yards from the back tees providing a real challenge for the long ball golfers. While also providing a memorable experience for the average golfer, like me, with 4 sets of tees of varying lengths.
The flora of the course offers stunning giant magnolias alongside 300-year-old oak trees, freshwater lakes, and salt marshes. Maples used the unique landscape shaped by the Waccamaw River and the natural contours of the land, resulting in rolling fairways and large, undulating greens surrounded by lush stands of flowering azaleas, camellias, crepe myrtle, wildflowers, and flowering shrubs that enhance the course’s beauty. There are also two challenging peninsula greens that require precision off the tee and careful attention to yardage, as golfers can easily find themselves in trouble. It is said that three greens on the course exceed 50 yards in depth, meaning that simply being on the green might not be sufficient—you might even need binoculars to see the pin!
Heritage GC holds historical significance as well with two of its holes located beside centuries-old cemeteries. Notably, Mr. Pawley is buried just off the fourth hole, and a slave cemetery, now a historical landmark, is situated by the eighth tee.

Tradition Golf Club

Course Brief:
Traditions GC is part of the laid-back lifestyle found in the Lowcountry, the southernmost area of the Grand Strand in Myrtle Beach, SC. It is located on Pawleys Island and adjacent to the Willbrook community in the Litchfield Beach area. It is a 6,875-yard Par 72 golf course. The course combines stunning natural beauty with a challenging yet fair test of golf, making it an enjoyable experience for players of all skill levels.
Traditions GC is set among the rolling terrain of a 16th-century plantation, the course has wide fairways lined with trees, offering ample room to use your driver and keep the ball in play. The fairways are accompanied by large, undulating greens, while water hazards come into play on ten holes. Additionally, there are two island greens and numerous challenges, including both fairway and waste bunkers that require careful navigation. The Bermuda grass greens are well-guarded, demanding precise shots, and feature subtle breaks. Putting necessitates attentive reading.
There is a quite elaborate practice facility which many consider to be unparalleled. It includes a 43,000-square-foot building shaped like a clover, offering four designated practice areas. It is a large complex, so it’s advisable to arrive early to warm up before your round.
Traditions Golf Club was recognized as South Carolina’s “Golf Course of the Year” by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association in 2001, received the “Top Fairways” honor from Golf for Women in 1998, was nominated as “Best New Public Course” by Golf Digest in 1996, and was recently awarded 4.5 stars by Golf Digest.

True Blue Golf Club
Photo provided by True Blue Golf Club
Course Brief
True Blue Plantation and Golf Club is a links-style course that features wide fairways, well-protected greens, and a variety of water hazards. And would you believe, instead of traditional sand bunkers, the course has large waste areas.
The late Mike Strantz designed the course for golfers of all skill levels to enjoy their experience while still providing a challenge for seasoned players.
Mr. Strantz preserved the natural beauty of the area, which is built on the site of a five-century-old rice and indigo plantation. The rolling terrain and native vegetation create a most spectacular setting, complete with pristine salt marshes, wetlands, and maritime forests of live oaks and pines.
The course layout includes three par fives, each measuring around 599 yards, as well as five par threes. The par fours are fair, ranging from 430 to 450 yards. Golfers will experience some dramatic elevation changes from the tees and while approaching the elevated greens. While all 18 holes present well-protected and challenging approaches to the greens, most tee shots are straightforward and free from major obstacles. Players should pay special attention to their approach shots and choose the appropriate tee box based on their skill level.

Willbrook Plantation Golf Club
Photo compliments of Willbrook Golf Club
Course Brief:
If you love nature, you’ll enjoy this course. It is another course on Pawleys Island designed by Dan Maples. The course winds through century-old oaks draped in moss, marshland, ponds, creeks, and sand bunkers, all while showcasing abundant wildlife. The course was built on two former rice plantations and offers a challenging yet welcoming experience for players of all skill levels.
The fairways and greens are generally well-groomed, and six historical markers throughout the course provide insights into a deep and often troubled history of the area. The Lowcountry parkland-style design makes use of the natural terrain, with impressive moss-laden oaks framing the fairways, some of which come into play.
The course features wide fairways with numerous sand bunkers located in the landing zones and around the greens. While I didn’t count them myself, I’ve heard there are an astounding 45 sand traps and waste areas combined that come into play. In fact, I found a lot of them. It seems they were strategically placed just for me. Additionally, many water hazards, ponds, and marsh areas are visible throughout the course, sometimes affecting tee shots or approaches to the greens. Ponds, streams, and creeks flow into the lakes and ponds, mostly situated along the perimeters of the course. In some cases, you will need to clear wetlands and natural areas to get on the fairways.
Also, there are plenty of trees to navigate as well. The greens are generally raised and protected on many sides by deep bunkers, although there are openings in front that invite players to risk chipping or pitching between them. Once on the greens, you’ll encounter quick but, said to be, true sloping bent grass Bermuda surfaces. Have fun.

Things to do or discover:
Hunt down the legend of the Gray Man
He is the ghost of a young man traveling from Charleston to see his fiancée in 1822. On the way, he and his horse were caught in quicksand-like pluff mud in the marshes before Pawley’s Island and died. It is said his spirit has haunted the shore nearby ever since. He is said to be still looking for the girl he loves.
Beach it
Pawleys Island beaches are the best and are a sun-seekers paradise. The beaches have soft white sand, and the ocean is crystal clear. Pawleys Island has the largest free public beach access lot in Georgetown County, located on the south end of the island. In addition, there are 8 other public beach access points on the island, which offer visitors the use of approximately.
Discover the Original Hammock Shop
Hammock Shops Village: Check out Rope Hammocks originally designed by Riverboat captain Joshua John Ward to sleep cooler instead of traditional hot canvas – sometime in the late 1800s. They are made of loosely woven cotton or now nylon. It’s now one of the most popular hammock brands in the country, and his descendants still operate it.
Shelling
The best shelling in the area is North Island, near the entrance to Winyah Bay in Georgetown. The island can only be reached by boat, and the beach is usually covered with shells. Lowcountry Plantation Tours offers an excellent tour out to the island and includes a generous amount of time for folks to stroll the beach and collect shells.
Fishing Pawleys Creek
This can be very productive for flounder, trout, and redfish. However, it is a very shallow creek, so many folks choose to fish from a kayak, john boat, or from land, which makes it an ideal location for a family fishing outing. The public can access fishing areas on the North and South end of Pawleys Island, where parking is available. For more information about fishing in Pawleys Island, stop by and talk to the staff at Pawleys Island Outdoors. They are very helpful and will assist you with getting the right tackle and rigs for the type of fishing you want to do on Pawleys Island.
